Alerts & Warnings
The Emergency Alert System (EAS) was established by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in 1994. The EAS replaced the Emergency Broadcast System (EBS) as a tool the President and emergency management agencies can use to warn the public about emergency situations.
"This is a test of the Emergency Alert System..." You will occassionally hear or see these words on your local broadcast station or cable system. EAS allows broadcast stations, cable systems, participating satellite companies, and other services to send and receive emergency information quickly and automatically. The EAS provides a way for state and local personnel to quickly distribute important local emergency information.
