Answers to frequently asked questions about Disaster READY Training are provided below. If you have a question that isn’t on the list, please send us an email.
Who is the training for?
The training is for youth interested in developing skills to assist them during a disaster or emergency, should one occur within their community.
Who is sponsoring the training?
The training program is sponsored by READYColorado, the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security, the City and County of Denver, and the City of Aurora on behalf of the Denver Urban Area Security Initiative.
How much does it cost?
Participation in the training is free. Funding for the program is provided by a FEMA/U.S. Department of Homeland Security grant.

How are participants selected?
Representatives from the sponsoring agencies will be reviewing applications and letters of reference to make student selections. It’s important that all applications are fully completed and all additional paperwork is complete. Applicants who complete both the online application and all required pdf/print forms are eligible to attend. Selection will be made on a first-come, first-served basis. Once all spaces are filled, a wait list will be created (in case there are cancellations) and these students will be notified about future training opportunities.

What about students with special needs?
Disaster READY Training is a very hands-on and activity-oriented experience. When your student completes the online application, please provide details about any special needs. If possible, provide information at least 2 weeks in advance of the training dates so that necessary arrangements can be made.
How are instructors selected?
Instructors have experience and expertise in the area they are instructing on, and have an interest in working with youth.
What about safety?
All staff and volunteers have undergone a background checks, and the training facilities have been selected because they are safe and secure (e.g., school building and police station).
Is transportation to/from the training provided?
No, transportation is the responsibility of the student and parent/guardian. You can make arrangements for a family member, friend, etc. to drop off and pick up your student.
Do I need to bring a lunch and snacks?
No, lunch, snacks, and beverages will be provided, but if you have special dietary restrictions please let us know ahead of time.
How early can I arrive before the scheduled starting time?
A supplemental class will be offered at 7a.m. for those needing to arrive before 8 a.m.
What should I wear?
Please wear comfortable casual clothing appropriate for hands-on learning and have sturdy closed toe shoes for the activities.
Can my friends/siblings and I be on the same team?
Due to the number of attendees special requests are not guaranteed.
Is there a protocol for bringing prescribed medications?
Please bring all medications in a clear plastic baggie type container with your name and dosage clearly marked.
Will the training be canceled if it rains?
No, all activities will be held regardless of the weather.
Should I bring sunscreen?
Sunscreen will be available, but if you prefer you may bring your own.
I will only be able to attend part of the sessions. Can I make up the classes I miss?
Due to the structure of the program, it’s necessary to be present for each day. No make up sessions will be provided.
My parents cannot pick me up at the scheduled time. Can I arrange to stay late?
The Denver Police Academy and Aurora Public Schools cannot make special arrangements for attendees to stay late.
Will I receive school credit for attending?
Arrangements have not been made to provide school credits.
